What is Academic Team?
Students must meet eligibility requirements to join the team. These requirements will be checked in the first few weeks of the 2018-2019 school year. If your child is eligible, we will contact you via email.
What is the Academic Team? The Academic Team is a group of 3rd-8th grade students who will compete in general knowledge trivia challenges. The JV team will consist of 5th and 6th grade students. Varsity will consist mostly of 7th and 8th grade students, but all students can compete on varsity. Each game can have 4-6 players competing against players from schools in the surrounding area. Students must possess a wide range of knowledge, a competitive spirit, the desire to learn and improve, and the ability to quickly recall information. Outgoing students tend to do better, but shyness is not part of the eligibility criteria. This is a great place for typically shy people to find like minds and blossom.
Cost: Each team member will pay a $10 team fee. This covers the cost of the team shirt and entrance fees for county and national tournaments. Team shirts will also be available for purchase for parents.
Practice: The Academic Team will meet for practices on Wednesdays after school until 4:00. Student must be picked up promptly at 4:00. Pickups follow the 3 strike rule: students get a pass on late pickup 2 times, on the 3rd late pickup, they will be removed from the team. Students participating in sports or other extracurricular activities will split time between the two teams, an arrangement that will be figured out between the coaches.
Tournaments: Okaloosa County holds 6 tournaments each year, almost one per month of the school year. Students will need transportation to and from the tournaments, which are hosted by different Okaloosa County middle schools on Saturdays. Our team also competes in NAQT tournaments. These tournaments are hosted by schools in surrounding counties (some as far as Jacksonville) on Saturdays throughout the school year. Again, students would need transportation to and from these tournaments. The competition schedule can be found on the calendar page.

Fundraisers: The Academic Team will participate in fundraisers during the school year. All team members are expected to participate in the fundraisers. Funds raised will go toward the cost of tournament registrations, NAQT National Tournament fees (if we qualify) and costs incurred by hosting our own NAQT qualifier tournament. See fundraiser page for more information.
We have a lot of fun on the Academic Team, while also learning, creating friendships and learning life skills. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Varsity Coach Yates at [email protected] or JV Coach Nunez at [email protected].
